Liability driven investment: managing scheme risks efficiently

London: 29 September 2009

Today we offer two liability driven investment (LDI) modules. In the morning we will consider LDI and how it can be used to manage scheme risks efficiently. In the afternoon we will present a case study that draws on first-hand experience of the practicalities of implementing an LDI programme.

Attendees are welcome to attend one or both modules and join us for lunch which is provided at 12.30:

Times:

Part one – 09.00 to 12.30

Part two – 13.15 to 14.45

Part 1: managing scheme risks efficiently

Presenter: Professor Andrew Clare (view biography)

Despite its many interpretations, Liability Driven Investment (LDI) is simply the efficient management of the many and various risks that pension schemes face, given their liabilities and asset mix. This session looks at these risks, whether or not they should be assumed and how best to reduce exposure to those that are unrewarded. Underpinning the session is the pricing, mechanics and nuances of swaps for LDI purposes.

Part 2: getting to grips with the practicalities – a case study

Presenter: Chris Wagstaff (view biography)

Chris shares his experiences in scoping and implementing an LDI programme by drawing on his own first-hand knowledge as a Trustee Director of the Aviva Staff Pension Scheme and a member of its Investment Committee.

Suggested entry requirements: Prospective delegates are advised to have a good understanding of fixed income and/or have attended an Investment Tutor Fixed Income session.

Benefits of attending this sessions: After having attended this session you should have a good understanding of what LDI comprises and how and why schemes should de-risk and the associated costs in doing so.
